Fierce fight at the first stage of the Targa Florio Classica 2020, the classic regularity race organized by AC Palermo and ACI with the support of ACI Sport and ACI Storico, valid for the Campionato Italiano Grandi Eventi ACI Sport.
Leaving the Museo dei Motori e dei Meccanismi del Sistema Museale dell’Università di Palermo, the competitors of the Targa Florio Classica 2020 faced the sea and the mountains, first with the tests in Castellammare del Golfo, then with the ascent of Mount Erice; then Castello di Venere and Mozia before the stamp check at Cantine Florio, in Marsala. In the announced initial head-to-head between the two FIAT 508Cs, respectively of 1937 and 1939, of Passanante-Di Mauro and Moceri-Dicembere, a third one was added, from 1938, the one of Angelo Accardo and Filippo Becchina.
In the afternoon some clouds and a hint of rain certainly did not weaken the indomitable spirit of the regular riders, then sun again as the cars triumphantly entered Campobello di Mazara, also greeted by the Mayor Giuseppe Castiglione. “An honor to welcome the passage of the Targa Florio into the cradle of regularity” declared the mayor, this is in fact the beating heart of this discipline in Italy, with a school that has seen numerous champions grow. Even the President of the Automobile Club of Trapani, Giovanni Pellegrino, who spoke on this occasion, was able to say he was proud and satisfied to see the numerous crews tackle the road tests in the center of the town. The honors in Campobello di Mazara were not reserved only for the passage of the Champions, also the President of the Automobile Club of Italy, Angelo Sticchi Damiani, was joyfully welcomed by the illustrious guests, bewitched by his beautiful 1957 Lancia Aurelia B24. On the sporting side, the excellent performance of the 1973 Lancia Fulvia Coupé of Dario Converso and Federica Ameglio and of another 1938 FIAT 508 C, the fourth in the race, the one of Alberto Diana and Anna Maria Revello also stand out.
From here, there are still chronometric checks along the road from the salt pans to Garibaldi’s route, Castelvetrano, Santa Ninfa and Cretto di Burri before returning to the University after 77 tests, including time trials and media, measured by the official timeekeper Tag Heuer on over 300km of road.
Waiting for the official results to be released, the joy of the competitors: "I'm really happy" says Mario Passanante, who wears Mafra colors in this competition, "the added value was the passage to my hometown, I was excited like a child". An emotion also shared by Giovanni Moceri: “a great celebration for me, a return to origins. A beautiful stage, well articulated, well paced, we didn't have time to get bored and we enjoyed the Trapani landscape to the fullest. The organization confirmed its great ability". Both competitors then said they were satisfied with their performance, as was Angelo Accardo, for the first time in a pre-war car, which will certainly use the experience accumulated in this first stage.
An intense day in which the skills at the wheel of all the drivers were put to the test, therefore a rest was deserved, but it is forbidden to lose concentration: tomorrow morning, starting at 9:00, we will be back on the road again for the second and last stage of the Targa Florio Classica 2020, this time in a path that will follow the original one on the Madonie Circuit, bringing the myth of Floriopoli back to life.
