(Extraordinary Commissioner of the City of Palermo), Leoluca Orlando (Mayor of Palermo),

Fabrizio Micari (Principal of the University of Palermo), Marco Rogano

(General Director of ACI Sport Service), Angelo Pizzuto (Chairman of AC Palermo),

and Giancarlo Minardi (Targa Florio Historic Speed Coordinator).

“A Cursa”, which will be held from 5 to 8 May 2016, will be split into four events to

celebrate the 100th edition of the oldest car race in the world.

The 100th Targa Florio is an event of global calibre – stated the Chairman of the Automobile

Club of Palermo Angelo Pizzuto – not only because the oldest car race in the world marks the evolution of car racing, but because it celebrates the ‘Targa Florio’ phenomenon which characterised an era from a cultural, social and historical viewpoint, in addition to the sporting aspect. Targa Florio originated from an idea of the magnate Vincenzo Florio who decided to follow his passion in 1906, organising the first edition of what was to become the social phenomenon of the century, influencing the lifestyle of a developing Sicilian society in search of liberation.

The Automobile Club of Palermo, ACI Italia and all our partners are ready to celebrate the 100th edition of the oldest car race in the world, welcoming guests and competitors who will total almost a thousand, but above all fans and visitors from the world over. We will show them all the beauty that Sicily and the Madonie mountains have to offer in terms of sport, nature, culture and food and wine ”.

The Mayor, Mr. Orlando and Mr. Munafò did the honours during the conference and wanted to reaffirm the lasting bond that has always held Palermo and Targa Florio together.

The Principal of the University of Palermo Fabrizio Micari proudly greeted the key role which the University of Palermo will have in the forthcoming Targa Florio.

Indeed, the Press Room of the Targa Florio Classic and Historic Speed and the Race Management will be set up in Palermo University's Faculty of Engineering.

While Viale delle Scienze will be the start for the first leg of the Classic race, scheduled for Friday 6 May.

Let us have a look in detail at the four events comprising the forthcoming Targa Florio.

Targa Florio Rally,  this is the third date of the Italian Rally Championship, with validity for the Regional Championship, but also the third seasonal round of the Italian Vintage Car Rally Championship which will allow for a return to Sicily's streets of the cars that made the Targa Florio great during the 1970s and 1980s – rally's golden years.

Targa Florio Historic Rally. The “Targa 100” special event for both rallies from Floriopoli to Cerda, will allow the cars in the race to drive past the temple of car racing, in other words the Floriopoli stands, the heart of the four events comprising the 100th Targa Florio. Palermo, Campofelice di Roccella, Cefalù, Cerda, Collesano and Gratteri are the towns where the Targa Florio was born and grew up, and where it continues to live, looking towards the future.

Targa Florio Classic, the exclusive regularity race for cars of special historical and sporting value, represents the reference event for vintage car lovers. The Classic will offer the opportunity to admire the most beautiful vintage cars of leading brands, built between 1906 and 1970, that will perform along the roads of the Madonie mountains and all of Sicily.

Historic speed, the great innovation of this edition will be the dynamic show which will see some of the drivers that have written the history of the Targa Florio car race on display from Floriopoli to Cerda: from Ickx and Merzario, to Van Lennep and Vaccarella, along with De Adamich, Facetti, Munari, Helmut Marko, Nanni Galli and many others, without forgetting the prestigious cars taking part, from the Alfa Romeo T33 to the Porsche Carrera Slrs of the Historic Museum through to Ferraris.

Historic Speed - said its coordinator, Giancarlo Minardi - is a leap into the past to celebrate an event which has represented and continues to represent a great brand over 110 years of history. A great brand which has to look to the future, in order to make “a Cursa” a point of reference for the sport and tourism of this wonderful island called Sicily”.

"Vincenzo Florio  -  concluded Minardi -  had a modern vision 110 years ago which allowed him to grasp the major potential of this race which has been developed over the years. Proof of this lies in the great enthusiasm of the drivers I contacted to take part in this event."
